Søren Kierkegaard to Regine Olsen – no date (translated by Henric Rosenmeier) - 5

My Regine!

Three weeks ago today you were expecting a letter from me, but I did not write. Alas, to whom could I have entrusted that letter? Do you remember the poem, "The Fiddler at the Fountain" ? Much of it is very beautiful, but what appeals to me most is that he confides only in "the light dancer of the woods"" the fish, the bird, the mouse etc. Of course, I know that this is not really in the poem, and that if some people were to see these lines, they would accuse me of having read much more into the poem than was there originally. So be it. Why should that concern me as long as you undestand me, as long as we have a secret bond that remains a mystery to everyone else, not only because it is confided mutely, but because it speaks a language that you alone understand, and I, when you have understood me. But three weeks ago you expected me to write and not to come calling - and today you expect me to come calling and not to write. What if I were to do both! (However, I shall probably not call until twelve o'clock in order to escort you to my aunt's in Gothersgade.) In truth, I come, I write, I think, I speak and falter and sigh, and my room resounds with my monologues, and in you alone, my sole confidante, dare I confide what it is that now boisterously wells up in me and then again is lost in silent reverie  - in you alone dare I confide - what you have confided in me. For know that every time you repeat that you love me from the deepest recesses  of your soul, it is as though I heard it for the first time, and just as a man who owned the whole world would need a lifetime to survey his splendors, so I also seem to need a lifetime to contemplate all the riches contained in your love. Know that every time you thus solemnly assure me that you always love me equally well, both when I am happy and when I am sad, most when I am sad - because you know is divine nostalgia and everything good in man is sorrow's child - know that then you are rescuing a soul from Purgatory. You know that the Catholic Church teaches that the prayers of the faithful succor the souls in Purgatory; I know that this is true, and each time you speak of you love, I cease to hear the rattling of the chains; then I am free [in the margin: "He (Eros) brings peace to mankind, rest to the stormy sea; he bids the winds be silent, and he lulls sorrow into slumber"], infinitely free like a bird on the wing; then I am free, and happy in my freedom, and am myself a witness to my own happiness, while formely I was both prisoner and my own jailer.

Yours eternally, S.K.

Whenever you catch a breath of that heliotrope at home, which is still fresh, please think of me, for truly my mind and my soul are turned toward this sun, and I have a deep longing for you, thou sun amongst women.

Søren Kierkegaard to Regine Olsen – no date (translated by Henric Rosenmeier) - 4

My Regine!
Es endet Schmerz
So wie der Scherz
So wie die Nacht
Eh' man's gedacht.
(Grief ceases
As does jesting
As does the night
Before one expected it to do so.
L.A. von Arnim, Halle und Jerusalem)

The other day when you came to see me you told me that when you were confirmed your father presented you with a bottle of lily of the valey (Extrait double de Muguet). Perhaps you thought that I did not hear this, or perhaps you thought that it had slipped by my ear like so much else that finds no response within. But not at all! But as that flower conceals itself so prettily within its big leaf, so I first allowed the plan of sending you the enclosed to conceal itself in the hals-transparent veil of oblivion so that, freed from every external consideration, even the most illusive, rejuvenated to a new life in comparison with which its first existence was but earthly life, it might now exude that fragrance for which longing and memory ("from the spring of my youth") are rivals. However, it was nearly impossible for me to obtain this essence in Copenhagen. Yet in this respect there is also a providence, and the blind god of love always finds a way. You happen to receive it at this very moment ( just before you leave the house), because I know that you, too, know the infinity of the moment. I only hope it will not be too late. Hasten, my messanger, hasten my thought, and you, my Regine, pause for an instant, for only a moment stand still.

Yours eternally, S.K.

Søren Kierkegaard to Regine Olsen – no date (translated by Henric Rosenmeier) - 3

My Regine!

This is Knippelsbro. I am that person with the spyglass. As you know, figure appearing in a landscape are apt to look somewhat curious. You may take comfort, therefore, in the fact that I do not look quite that ugly that every artistic conception always retains something of the ideal, even in caricature. Several art experts have disagreed as to why the painter has not provided any background whatsoever. Some have thought this an allusion to a folk tale about a man who so completely lost himself in the enjoyment of the view from Knippelsbro that at last he saw nothing but the picture produced by his own soul, which he could just as well have been looking at in a dark room. Others have thought that it was because he lacked the perspective necessary for drawing - houses. But the spyglass itself has the unique characteristic about which tradition tells us the following: the outermost lens is of mirror glass so that when one trains it on Trekroner and stands on the left side of the bridge at an angle of 5 degree off Copenhagen, one sees something quite different from what is seen by all the other people about one; thus, in the midst of a friendly chat about the view of the ships, one sees or thinks that one sees, or hopes to see, or wishes to see, or despairs of seeing that which the secret genie of the spyglass reveals to him who understands how to use it correctly. Only in the proper hands and for the proper eye is it a divine telegraph; for everybody else it is a useless contrivance. Yesterday your brother scolded me for always speaking of my cobbler,my fruit dealer, my grocer , my coachman etc., etc., etc. By this means he seems to have accused me of a predominant use of the first-person possessive pronoun. Only you know of your faithful friend that I am not extensively but intensively much more given to the use of the second-person possessive pronoun. Indeed, how could he know that, how could any person at all - as I am only yours
Yours eternally.
In testimony whereof I permit my eternalized P.Moller to stand as witness.
Granted in our study.

И альфа и омега бури;

Although Paul Friedländer had sought in his book entitled simply, Plato, to deny that the alpha in aletheia was to be understood as a privative, it is really Heribert Boeder's 1959 essay Der frühgriechische Wortgebrauch Von Logos und Aletheia that seems to prompt Heidegger to revise his long standing insistence that aletheia named the originary Greek understanding of being as unconcealment. Boeder argues convincingly in his essay that truth as aletheia in Greek epic poetry was rooted in the world of human communication and grew out of that context

Søren Kierkegaard to Regine Olsen – no date (translated by Henric Rosenmeier) - 2

My Regine!
How beautiful the face with a meaningful expression, how enchanting the eye that understands every hint! It is as if one read with his eyes what the other wrote with his eyelid. And yet the eye has its limits and the writing of the eyelid cannot be read from a distance; it can only be understood close up. But how quick is the thought when it is sent winging with all the might of the tensed spirit like an arrow from the drawn bow, and how surely it strikes its target! How lightly and beautifully it rises like the falcon, hovers over prey, lights on it, holds it fast, so that nothing can tear it away.
It is Indian summer, towards evening. The little window is open, the moon swells, outdoing itself in splendor so as to eclipse the mirror image in the sea, which seems to outshine it almost audibly- it is that wonderful. The moon flushes with rage and conceal itself in a cloud, the sea shivers. -- You sit on the sofa, your thoughts float far afield, your eye is fixed on nothing, infinite thoughts fade away in the infinity of the wide heavens, everything in between is gone, it is as though you sailed in the air. And you summon the fleeting thoughts that show you an object, and if a sigh had propulsive force, if a human being were so light, so ethereal that the compressed air released by a sigh could carry him away, and indeed the more quickly the deeper the sigh-then you would be with me in that very instant.
-----But how quick is the thought when it is sent winging with all the might of the tensed spirit like an arrow from the drawn bow, when yearning is the bowstring, joyful certainty the arm that draws it, and unfailing hope the eye that take aim.

My Regine!
To
Our own little Regine

A line like this under the word serves to alert the typesetter that he must space out the word indicated. To space out means to pull the words apart from one another. Therefore, when I space out the words written above, I believe that I would have to pull them so far apart that a typesetter would probably lose patience because it is likely that he would never to set anything more in his life.
