Oedipus and the Riddle Jorge Luis Borges

A quadruped at dawn, tall in the day,
and wandering three-footed among the empty
edges of evening—in such a way
did the timeless Sphinx see his fickle family,
mankind, and with the afternoon there came
one man who somehow, through the mirror
of the monstrous form, deciphered the terror,
the image of his fate and his decline.
We are Oedipus and in a timeless sense
we are that sinuous triple beast,
all that we will be and we have been.
To see the infinite shape of our existence
would finish us; in his pity God has given
the day succeeding day, and forgetfulness.

     Двуногий днем, а вечером трехногий,
     Кто этот зверь, единый и премногий?
     Бесстрастный сфинкс от смертных ждал ответа.

     Мы суть Эдип. Он, к зеркалу прильнувший,
     Есть тот, кто разгадал в отображенье
     Чудовищного монстра -- отраженье
     Своей судьбы, его не обманувшей.

     В эдиповой загадке, как в кошмаре,
     Плодятся формы триединой твари,
     Сплошной и непрерывной, как мгновенье.

     Ваятель этой формы многоликой
     Нам ниспослал из милости великой
     Спасительный, бесценный дар забвенья.

Edipo y el Enigma

Cuadrúpedo en la aurora, alto en el día
y con tres pies errando por en vano
ámbito de la tarde, así veía
la eterna esfinge a su inconstante hermano,
el hombre, y con la tarde un hombre vino
que descifró aterrado en el espejo
de la monstruosa imagen, el reflejo
de su declinación y su destino.
Somos Edipo y de un eterno modo
la larga y triple bestia somos, todo
lo que seremos y lo que hemos sido.
Nos aniquilaría ver la ingente
forma de nuestro ser; piadosamente
Dios nos depara sucesión y olvido.
