что по прихоти я сделал своим;

How good was Auden? by Jeffrey Hart

W.H. Auden - The Secret Agent

Control of the passes was, he saw, the key
To this new district, but who would get it?
He, the trained spy, had walked into the trap
For a bogus guide, seduced by the old tricks.

At Greenhearth was a fine site for a dam
And easy power, had they pushed the rail
Some stations nearer. They ignored his wires:
The bridges were unbuilt and trouble coming.

The street music seemed gracious now to one
For weeks up in the desert. Woken by water
Running away in the dark, he often had
Reproached the night for a companion
Dreamed of already. They would shoot, of course,
Parting easily two that were never joined.

It is an unrhymed sonnet, simple enough in surface meaning, but which has proved troubling to explicators because of its supposed lack of context. But enough 'context' is provided by an unnoticed allusion in the last line, one which Auden, fresh from the Oxford English School, had every reason to believe would be understood.
The line is taken from the Old English poem 'Wulf and Eadwacer', which is the monologue of a captive woman addressed to her outlawed lover (she is on one island, he on another). The line is: 'paet mon eape toslite5 paette naefre gesomnad waes' ('They can easily part that which was never joined together', Exeter Book, p. 180). Thus the situation is one of unconsummated love. The spy represents the individual's emotional urge to make contact with another human being ('this new district'); he is forced to act as a secret agent because the individual does not consciously recognize his love (the spy) and represses it. 'They', who ignore his wires, and eventually shoot him, represent the conscious will, the Censor, which represses the individual's emotional desires. Like John Nower in Paid on Both Sides, 'they' shoot the spy because they are unwilling to face the truth about the situation which he reveals. A later sonnet, 'Meiosis' (CS P, p. 77), works by a very similar allegory, and acts as a useful gloss on the unbuilt bridges (sexual contact). The trouble is not entirely 'their' fault, of course. The spy is betrayed by his own 'side', but also walks into a trap. The 'old tricks' which seduce him are, I think, the limiting social conventions external to the divided individual, but hardly less responsible for his inability to make human contact.

W.H. Auden - The Watershed

Who stands, the crux left of the watershed,
On the wet road between the chafing grass
Below him sees dismantled washing-floors,
Snatches of tramline running to a wood,
An industry already comatose,
Yet sparsely living. A ramshackle engine
At Cashwell raises water; for ten years
It lay in flooded workings until this,
Its latter office, grudgingly performed.
And, further, here and there, though many dead
Lie under the poor soil, some acts are chosen,
Taken from recent winters; two there were
Cleaned out a damaged shaft by hand, clutching
The winch a gale would tear them from; one died
During a storm, the fells impassable,
Not at his village, but in wooden shape
Through long abandoned levels nosed his way
And in his final valley went to ground.

Go home, now, stranger, proud of your young stock,
Stranger, turn back again, frustrate and vexed:
This land, cut off, will not communicate,
Be no accessory content to one
Aimless for faces rather there than here.
Beams from your car may cross a bedroom wall,
They wake no sleeper; you may hear the wind
Arriving driven from the ignorant sea
To hurt itself on pane, on bark of elm
Where sap unbaffled rises, being spring;
But seldom this. Near you, taller than the grass,
Ears poise before decision, scenting danger.

R.M. Rilke Watershed (from 'The book of Hours')

Dir ist mein Beten keine Blasphemie:
als schliige ich in alten Buchern nach,
dafi ich dir sehr vervvandt bin — tausendfach.

Ich will dir Liebe geben. Die und die . . .

1st uns der Vater denn nicht das, was war;
vergangne Jahre, welche fremd gedacht,
veraltete Gebarde, tote Tracht,

To you my prayers are no blasphemy:
the old books tell me I am related to you
in a thousand ways.

I want to love you.

Does anyone love a father? Doesn’t one turn away
as you turned from me, your face hardened,
wanting to escape these empty, helpless hands?
Doesn’t one leave a father’s worn-out words
to old books that are seldom read?

Is his heart not a watershed
from which one flows away,
toward passion and suffering?

Isn’t the father always that which was?
Used-up years with their odd ways of thinking,
outmoded gestures, old-fashioned dress,
pale hands and ashen hair.

And while in his time he may have been a hero,
he is a leaf that, when we grow, falls away.

* * *

W.H.Auden 'The City' (from 'The Quest')

In villages from which their childhood's came
Seeking Necessity, they had been taught
Necessity by nature is the same,
No matter how or by whom it be sought.

The city, though, assumed no such belief,
But welcomed each as if he came alone,
The nature of Necessity like grief
Exactly corresponding to his own.

And offered them so many, every one
Found some temptation fit to govern him;
And settled down to master the whole craft

Of being nobody; sat in the sun
During the lunch-hour round the fountain rim;
And watched the country kids arrive, and laughed.

Jorge Luis Borges "Adam cast forth"

Was there a garden or was it a dream?
Myself I asked, in fading light so slow.
And if the past, it comforts me to know,
Now Adam's own and sad, were but sleep's reams,

Nothing more than a magical, mad hoax
Of God?  All has been rendered imprecise
In memory, that clearest Paradise,
Exist it must, and will endure in hopes.

But not for me.  The ruthless dirt we shift
Has exiled me in internecine red
Of Cains and Abels and descendants' dread.
But to have loved remains our greatest gift.

To have been happy and to have touched
The living Garden, if but for one day.

Translated from Spanish by Paul Weinfield, © 2013

Was there a Garden, or was that a dream?
Dazed in the hazy light, I asked
(almost for comfort) if this was the past
that Adam, now cursed, had once redeemed?

This was not a magic hoax or con
of some god I dreamed.  It was the imprecise
memory of a certain Paradise,
one that lives and, I know, lives on …

… but not for me.  This stubborn life
is my punishment for the inbred strife
of Cains and Abels and all in their sway.

And yet, to be loved is something much,
to have been happy, and to have touched
this living Garden, if only for a day.

Was there a garden or was the garden a dream?
I ask myself, slowly in the evening light.
Almost for consolation, without delight,
If that past was real or if it only seems
Real to me now in misery, an illusion?
No more than a magical show
Of is god I do not know
But dreamed, and that Paradise, vague now, delusion?
But I know that Paradise will be
Even if it does not exist for me.
The warring incest of Cains and Abels is the tough earth's way
Of punishing me. Yet it is a good thing to have known of
Happiness and to have touched love,
The living garden, even if only for a day.

Translated by Genia Gurarie

Was there a Garden or was the Garden a dream?
Amid the fleeting light, I have slowed myself and queried,
Almost for consolation, if the bygone period
Over which this Adam, wretched now, once reigned supreme,

Might not have been just a magical illusion
Of that God I dreamed.  Already it's imprecise
In my memory, the clear Paradise,
But I know it exists, in flower and profusion,

Although not for me.  My punishment for life
Is the stubborn earth with the incestuous strife
Of Cains and Abels and their brood; I await no pardon.

Yet, it's much to have loved, to have known true joy,
To have had -- if only for just one day --
The experience of touching the living Garden.
